This thesis examines the role of KMT-CCP dialogue in the management of cross-Strait relations. Specifically, the thesis examines how both the KMT and CCP view the role of dialogue in navigating cross-Strait relations and the pursuit of their respective objectives—namely maintaining the status quo and unification respectively. Following this analysis, the paper then assesses how the Taiwan public perceives the KMT’s policy to pursue dialogue with the CCP and potential impacts this strategy has on the KMT’s electoral outcomes, ultimately ascertaining how the public views the effective management of cross-Strait relations. To answer this research question, the thesis draws on frameworks from deterrence theory and the notion of issue ownership, and utilizes several different qualitative methods, including expert interviews, descriptive analysis of public opinion data, and primary source analysis. The research discovers that both the KMT and CCP gain strategically from engaging in party-to-party dialogue, but that preconditions set by the CCP present hurdles for the KMT domestically and electorally. |
