This study investigates the dynamics of identity construction through the process of Othering in Taiwan. Utilizing the computational text analysis method of word embeddings, it conducts a comparative analysis of identity labels and the semantic relationships between keywords associated with both the Other and the Self. Special attention is given to the identity dimensions of geography and nationality, ethnicity, generational belonging, and gender, as well as their intersections. The study explores how these dimensions shape discursive boundaries and contribute to mechanisms of Othering. A qualitative assessment supplements the computational analysis. The results indicate only subtle forms of Othering in Taiwanese media, which tends to use Chinese identity markers in a neutral tone and across diverse contexts. Chinese ethnic identity labels are semantically closer to Taiwanese identity markers, while geographic and national terms appear more distant. A notable shift in Othering emerges, as waishengren now shows close proximity to Taiwanese identity labels. The primary site of Othering appears to involve female Chinese individuals, particularly those married to Taiwanese men, highlighting intersections between gender, citizenship, legal status, and nationalism.
