Australia was often viewed as a racist country due to its racial policies during the 20th century. Chinese who resided in this country faced mistreatment as a result of these biased regulations. During a time when ethnic relations were tense, a rural town in central Victoria decided to welcome the Chinese community by inviting them to perform during the most sacred festival in the Christian calendar. This action stood in sharp contrast to the social norms of that era. This thesis explores how Bendigo, as a community, challenges prevailing social perceptions through the Bendigo Easter Fair. The festival not only established a long-term cooperative relationship with the Chinese community but also embraced the dancing loong—a significant cultural symbol in Chinese tradition—as part of the community’s identity. This phenomenon defies social norms and counters the long-standing racist argument that ‘Chinese are pagans and cannot integrate into Australian society.’ It also presents an alternative perspective on the notion that Chinese Australians are victims of the ‘White Australia Policy’.
