In recent years, research on colonial education and gender issues has gradually gained scholarly attention. However, there remain significant gaps in the academic study of the development of female's education in 19th-century Hong Kong. Under the colonial system in particular, female's education was not merely a means of knowledge transmission, but also a crucial arena for power operations, the maintenance of social structures, and the dissemination of cultural values. Previous studies have mostly focused on male education systems or broader colonial education policies, with relatively little exploration of how female's education was constructed and shaped within complex power relations.
This thesis focuses on the period between 1842 and 1899 in Hong Kong, examining the struggles and negotiations over female's educational rights among the colonial governors, missionaries, and local Chinese. This study is based primarily on government archives, church publications, and contemporary Chinese and English-language newspaper commentaries. Combining perspectives from the history of education and colonial studies, it traces how the government, missionaries, and Chinese communities jointly participated in the establishment and implementation of women’s education systems. The thesis applies Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus to analyze how Chinese society adjusted its educational choices within existing cultural structures. It also incorporates the theory of intersectionality to examine how gender, class, and ethnicity intersected to influence women’s access to education in colonial Hong Kong.
This process of interaction among multiple forces reveals that the early development of female’s education in Hong Kong was not driven by a single actor. Rather, it gradually took shape through negotiations among various stakeholders, resulting in a distinctive educational system and gender ideology in Hong Kong. By reinterpreting this historical period, the paper aims to reflect on the structural conditions and driving forces behind educational development. It also seeks to provide historical insight into the possible pathways for achieving equitable and inclusive education today. |
