As artificial intelligence technology gradually integrates into language learning contexts, AI chatbots have begun to be applied to English speaking practice, providing learners with a low-pressure and repetitive practice-oriented interactive environment. This study explores how the anthropomorphic design of AI chatbots affects learners' sense of trust, anxiety, and willingness to communicate during English speaking practice, and further analyzes learners' preferences in AI chatbot selection.
This study adopts a mixed-methods approach to explore how anthropomorphic AI chatbots influence learners’ willingness to communicate in English. The quantitative part employs an experimental method and involves 105 non-native English speakers who have experienced speaking anxiety. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three AI chatbot interaction scenarios—high, moderate, or low levels of anthropomorphism—using the CallAnnie application as the experimental stimulus. The qualitative part includes coding and thematic analysis of open-ended questionnaire responses from 20 participants, aiming to understand learners’ interaction experiences and subjective perceptions of the AI chatbots. These qualitative insights help capture subtle aspects that are difficult to measure through quantitative data, thereby enriching the overall interpretation and practical implications of the study.
The research results indicate: (1) Interaction with AI chatbots helps alleviate learners' anxiety in English speaking contexts, with the most significant reduction being in the fear of negative evaluation; (2) The higher the level of anthropomorphism of AI chatbots, the greater the trust learners develop toward them, thereby increasing their willingness to communicate. However, the direct effect of trust on alleviating speaking anxiety is not significant, suggesting that other mediating variables may be involved; (3) Learners experiencing English speaking anxiety tend to prefer interacting with AI chatbots that share similarities with themselves. Similarities in gender, cultural background, and personal interests enhance the sense of safety, indicating that homophily plays a crucial role in language learning.
