This dissertation examines the changing dynamics of state-religion relations in Vietnam, concentrating on the strategic use of media by the Vietnamese state to navigate its interactions with various religious communities. It addresses the primary paradox of expanding religious freedom in response to international pressure while maintaining national unity and political stability as top priorities. Utilising managed religious pluralism theory, alongside the micro-level perspectives of lived religion, the study contends that Vietnam operates under a framework of pragmatic authoritarian pluralism. This framework, based on Hồ Chí Minh's ideological synthesis and profound cultural syncretism, utilises religion as a strategic tool for national development and social cohesion.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, encompassing policy analysis of legal frameworks in the case studies of Daklak and Son La provinces, alongside content analysis of digital religious expression on platforms such as Spotify and TikTok, thereby uncovering a complex system of managed inclusivity. Traditional media disseminate stories that the government approves of, linking religious groups to broader objectives such as poverty reduction, cultural preservation, and national unity. At the same time, digital platforms enable a distinctive type of "soft synchronization," empowering younger generations and ethnic minorities to disseminate and create religious content, investigate spiritual concepts, and cultivate hybrid expressions of faith. This digital space, while facilitating personal spiritual exploration and community development, predominantly showcases apolitical, self-help, and culturally grounded content, which inadvertently bolsters state stability and developmental goals.
The findings contest simplistic binaries of freedom and repression, offering a nuanced comprehension of the continuous redefinition of religious legitimacy through mediated engagement. This dissertation presents an innovative framework for understanding state-led religious pluralism in authoritarian settings, enhances the theoretical discourse on mediatization and lived religion, and provides essential policy recommendations for domestic governance and international human rights diplomacy in an increasingly globalized and digitized context. |
