This thesis explores Emmanuel Levinas’s ethical philosophy through the concept of “substitution” (la substitution), rethinking the conditions of responsibility and the status of the subject in contemporary society. Confronted with war, pandemics, climate change, and social conflicts, rationalist and autonomy-based ethics prove insufficient. For Levinas, ethics does not begin with rational choice but with the call of the Other’s face, which imposes on the self an infinite and inescapable responsibility. The study clarifies Levinas’s claim that “Ethics is first philosophy,” showing that the subject is not an autonomous center but a “Hostage” to the Other. The impossibility of substitution forms the ethical dilemma: the self can never truly become the Other, yet remains bound to bear infinite responsibility. This reveals the asymmetry of ethical relations, further illuminated through sensibility, exposure, and “Saying” (Dire) as the primordial expression of responsibility. Finally, the thesis examines the risks of infinite responsibility leading to the subject’s collapse, drawing on Marina Abramović’s Rhythm 0 and Rutger Bregman’s Humankind to assess challenges and alternatives. It concludes that Levinas’s ethics discloses responsibility as a one-sided, unreciprocated response. Despite its tensions, this framework offers a profound way to rethink responsibility and human coexistence in an age of crisis.
