With increasing awareness of mental health issues in Taiwanese society, young people aged 15 to 30 are now comfortable seeking psychological counseling, freeing themselves from the stigma it once held. However, the cost of psychological counseling makes it unaffordable for many young people on a long-term basis. Furthermore, lim-ited availability of campus counseling programs and government subsidies often results in a shortage of such resources. To assist young people with low risks of self-harm and suicide but still require treatment, this study proposes a healing agent that combines Ex-istential Hypnotherapy Theory with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology as a mental health support tool.
Employing the "Research through Design" (RtD) approach, this study builds on the concept of "imagery conscious technology" from Existential Hypnotherapy Theory, combining a Multimodal Large Language Models(MLLM) with text-to-image gen-eration capabilities to design a comprehensive healing process. This process guides us-ers through describing their difficulties, facilitating physical relaxation, and then moving on to image generation and the reinterpretation of their inner experiences. Existential hypnotherapy theory argues that understanding events solely through significative con-scious can easily lead to repetitive self-criticism. Appropriate guidance can help individ-uals shift towards tangible and visual experiences, enabling them to understand complex situations from a new perspective and ultimately achieve self-resolve and healing. A healing agent designed based on this theory can engage in conversation with users, in-duce physical relaxation through relaxation instructions, and utilize a text-to-image gen-eration model to allow users to view visual self-stories that guide them through different levels of consciousness, promoting emotional expression and self-awareness.
This diary study recruited 10 volunteers to interact with the healing agent for two consecutive weeks and asked them to record their daily experiences. Feedback from ac-tual users revealed that this interaction helped alleviate anxiety and enhance psychologi-cal resilience. The study also found that users' interactive behaviors and role perceptions varied depending on their level of engagement.
Given the limited counseling resources, healing agents have the potential to be-come important supplementary tools for primary psychological counseling, effectively conserving existing human and service resources. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of proper user positioning, ensuring that they serve as a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, professional mental health services.
