The thought of Ch`en Ta-ch`i, though less discussed in Taiwan after his death due to the overwhelming influence of contemporary Neo-Confucian figure such as Mou Tzong-san, is significant for its logical and ethical approach to Confucianism, in contrast to Mou`s transcendental and ontological approach. In the present paper, I attempt to reconstruct and evaluate the evolution and achievements of Ch`en`s Confucian studies. As aptly put by Antonio Cua in his Moral Visions and Tradition──Essays in Chinese Ethics, “The pioneering study of the conceptual aspects of Confucian ethics has been Ch`en Ta-ch`i`s Kung Tzu hs0eh-shuo.”Ch`en began his studies in psychology and logic at the beginning of the century, gradually making logical studies his main focus. On the basis of his training in logic, he first performed research on Indian logic, and then later extended his research to Chinese logic. After coming to Taiwan with the Central Government in 1948, Ch`en began to do research on the logical and conceptual aspects of Confucianism, starting with Hs0n Tzu, and then tracing his way back to Confucius and Mencius. Through in-depth study of the basic concepts, ethical argumentation and ethics of virtue in Confucianism, Ch`en gained a profound understanding of Confucian ethics. Indeed, he can be considered a pioneer in these areas of research. After analyzing and evaluating Ch`en`s research on logic, I conclude the paper by presenting an overall synthesis of his thought and intellectual achievements.
