In current business, organization and Internet environments, many informationrelated applications involve generating, searching, delivering, and presentingdifferent kinds of electronic multimedia documents. The publishing, managementand use of multimedia documents often requires the participation and operationof a group of people. The work flow management and control of collaborativedocument authoring as well as the information services of document searching and browsing have been expected to be performed across heterogeneous distributed networks. Establishing a multimedia document management group support system in which hypermedia user interface, workflow management, and multimedia data base management technologies are structurally integrated can greatly facilitate the document creation, management, control and application process. The goal of this paper is to propose a conceptual architecture, operational process, and physical environment of a group support system for multimedia document management. By constructing and integrating functions and processes of a document authoring and management system and a workflow management system under the proposed structure, cooperative multimedia document management as well as digital library services applications can be practically accomplished. A software integration approach is used to illustrate the physical implementation of a prototype system on the local area network and world wide web environments.
