Abstract:	本書作者以其深厚的學術素養，以及多年參與社會改造的實踐經驗，深刻探討解嚴之後台灣學習社會與公民社會的浮現，全書分為〈學習社會篇〉與〈公民社會篇〉兩部份。在〈學習社會篇〉裡，作者對現行教育提出嚴厲的批判，認為當今教育體制已嚴重扼殺學習者的創造力與學習樂趣。因此，必須提出顛覆性的概念和突破性的作法，才能為台灣教育打開一條出路。在〈公民社會篇〉部分，作者指出，台灣雖已奠立了民主制度的基石，但是民主政治中的參與僅限於投票選舉，人民並未扮演更積極的「公民」角色。為此，作者積極論述「社會自治」、「非政府組織」的自主性與公共性，並從質化與量化研究方法，解讀當前民間社會力對民主政治所做出的重要貢獻，以及所展現的意義。
