    Abstract: 此一研究計劃以佛教和僧伽羅意識 (Sinhala consciousness) 的關係為主題，探討斯里蘭卡早期佛教文化思想史的一些獨特展現風貌，並試圖與主流的國族主義(nationalism)論述做一論辯。 在探討過程中，從王權、語言、正典和史詩等不同的角度出發，來論析佛教從印度次大陸來到楞伽島，在相關思想上的一些重大變化。先是阿育王(A?oka)的出現給了上座部佛教一個保護佛法(s?sana)的新王權觀。此外，佛陀的寬鬆語言政策到了楞伽則成了獨尊巴利(P?li)為聖典語之堅持。而佛典三藏(Tipi?aka)之集成到了楞伽則轉為延續正統之系譜史(va?sa)的編纂。如此一來，正典(canon)乃變為史詩(epic)。在《大史》裡面，護衛佛法的度多伽摩尼（Du??hag?ma??）取代了以法(dhamma) 治國的阿育王。 以上的重大改變使得斯里蘭卡的上座部佛教具有強烈與楞伽佛教命運榮辱與共之歷史意識，普世宗教之信念慢慢演變成與族群相關之僧伽羅意識。這是一種與時並進各方因勢利導的宗教－歷史意識。 為了達成研究目標，除了研讀巴利文的相關資料之外，還計劃到斯里蘭卡進行田野調查。親臨佛教聖地與遺跡，乃有實地之歷史感。同時亦希望能到位於堪地(Kandy)的佩藍特尼耶大學(University of Peradeniya) 的巴利語與佛教研究系做短期學術訪問，利用他們的館藏資料來做補強，並向大學裡相關之學者請益，使撰寫之觀點與內容能更趨客觀與完備。
