Abstract:	打從青年時期開始，《傳播理論史》（Theorizing Communication: A History）的作者就「覺得傳播學門會讓我有個獨特的特許狀，讓我對於文化批評與政治經濟學的興趣，得以結合」。1席勒（Dan Schiller）作此「綺思暇想」，進而努力二十餘載後，成就了這本書。他要通過「文化」與「勞動」這兩組關鍵詞，書寫「傳播理論史」。作者認為，美國的行為研究固然誤導美國傳播研究於歧途，但上焉者從杜威（John Dewey）至米爾士（C. Wright Mills）⋯⋯等人，同樣沒有能夠超越實用主義與工具哲學的侷限，致使他們固然深知傳播資本體制的深層缺陷，但往往不願意、怯於綢繆利潤歸私以外的媒介系統，有何樣貌，或者，即便有心就此構思，他們經常難以釐清推動另類傳播模式的動能，何處可尋。於是，杜威號稱民主而重視一般人的能力，在此怪異地與菁英論者李普曼（Walter Lippmann），彷彿仍有共識。
