The US has the largest community, outside Japan, doing Japanese studies. How have Japanese studies in the United States developed like that? This article divides the development of Japanese Studies in the United States into different stages to answer following questions: “What factors trigger the emergence and development of Japanese studies in the States?” “Who study Japanese studies?” and “What hat topics do they mainly focus on?” Hopefully, this article would be able to draw implications for developing the Japanese studies in Taiwan from a review of the development of Japanese studies in the United States.
