    Abstract: 一、研究目的：西施惑吳興越是人們都早已耳熟能詳的一段歷史，然而，遍查歷史，卻未曾見有這段記載。本文即是在考證西施其人的真實與否，及其與吳越歷史之間的關系，進而歸納出西施故事演變的緣由及過程。
    二、文獻：西施二字最早出現於先秦諸子中，而故事初型起自吳越春秋及越絕書。此后，歷代的文學創作及地理方志均續有所見。直到明浣紗記傳奇，西施故事可謂成熟定型。接下來的倒浣紗及東周列國志等，或可視為故事的再創造。故本文的文獻資料，起於先秦，迄於明代，上自經史諸子，下至札記方志，涉獵廣博。
    三、研究方法：本文以人物主題及故事情節的溯源及演變歷史為主，屬於「主題學史」方法的運用。因故事的發展是隨著歷史的脈絡前進，故全文結構也是循著歷史的軌慫，做縱盄的探討。但遇關鍵性問題時，則暫時跳出時間的先后次序，而加以橫向的分析，可說是以時間為經，事件為緯的交錯方式組成。
    四、研究內容：全文除首章緒論、末章結論之外，再分六章。第二章述正史中所呈現的吳越歷史。第三章探討西施其人之起源及故事初型。第四章由魏晉至元明的文學作品中有文人士夫對西施故事的推動創造。第五章則由歷代方志看民間傳說的因襲附會。第六章專就浣紗記傳奇，看西施故事的成熟與定型。第七章探討故事定型后的承繼與再創造。
    五、研究結果：西施乃是先秦時即廣受歡迎的美女代稱，到了東漢，才在稗官野史的附會中成為吳越歷史的一部分，而美女故事一直是最為人們所津津樂道的，西施故事於是在文人士夫及地方傳說的創造因襲中，漸漸孳乳壯大，終於由一虛構體變成動人凄美的成熟故事。
