Abstract:	本論文凡一冊，約計十五萬字。正文部分，除緒論，結論外，共七章─上篇四章，下篇三章。上篇略依時間與質材，分述殷、周文字書寫所應用之工具，以及應用範圍、用字現象等，所依據者有二：一為古籍載辭，一為近世出士之實物，其內容涉及甲骨文、金文、玉石文與簡帛文。至於下篇所敘，則依據上篇之各個探討，歸結於漢字之本質和發展趨向，並深揭上古文字演進之背景，末則結穴於秦代之統一文字。換言之，上篇乃下篇之基礎。當代對古文字之研究，成果粲然。但多傾向小專題，優點為深入，唯不免忽略文字發展之整體性。本文即有鑑於茲，期能略補其憾。
