The contemporary discipline of International Relations (IR) is mainly characterized by mainstream theories of the West. Especially, from the viewpoint of neorealism, rising powers in the system are expected to challenge the incumbent hegemon and hence try to rewrite the established order. After the end of the Cold War, in contrast to neorealism, literature of neoliberalism stresses interdependence and nations’ participation in international organizations. Based on the learning and copying of the imported Western theories above, Chinese IR scholars manage to explore the meaning of the rise of China highlight its cooperation with the established order, with the insights of neoliberalism in particular. This study aims at analyzing the discourse of Chinese IR scholarship in neoliberalism. It further compare the main promises of neoliberalism and the Chinese studies of it to find out whether Western neoliberalism will be innovated through Chinese scholars’ imitation and transformation. Finally, by bringing together Chinese scholars’ neoliberalist studies, it offers a prospect of the future development of Chinese IR studies, including the rise of “Chinese School”.
