The paper selectively reviews the critical discourses on the China model. It divides the literature into English and Chinese studies and finds that they rely on similar themes in disputing the legitimacy behind advocacy for the China model. They deny the uniqueness of the China model and the alleged success of Chinese experiences of development. They suspect that discourse on the model aims at justifying continuous Communist Party rule over China. However, while the English literature tends to assert the universality of Western modernity, the Chinese literature shows consistent anxiety about the disinterest among China model writers in reading universal implications into China’s experiences of development.
