This project aims at understanding innovations of biomedical technology in their social contexts by way of exploring iconic aesthetics in patents. Current situations of biomedical technology and industry in Taiwan can thus be characterized. Drawings and figures in biomedical patents are in the midst of the passage from technology to industry. They are practical outcomes produced by patent authors who engage socially in their particular working contexts. Also, they reflect patent authors’ imagination on practice of the technology. The project is in request of three major questions: what are senses of practice revealing in the figures of biomedical patents? How do the patent authors’ different social backgrounds, that is, different positions of actors in a social space, do to the use of different kinds of figures in the patent? What are the relations between patent construction networks and imaginations/imaginaries of technological practice in a society? The project, with duration of three years, is planned to be carried out in three phases, each of which is to answer one of the aforementioned questions. The first phase is to analyze figures in biomedical patents by methods developed from iconology. The second phase is to do positioning figure authors in a patent field, thus locating the figures in a social space. The third phase is to configuring heterogeneous networks that produce the patents by way of connecting the patent field to institutional contexts of a local society. The dispositional point of view in the project locates actors in their field that is formed socially and historically, thus avoiding a Whiggish or linear view on the biomedical technology and industry. The approach of the project is very different from conventional ways such as those that concern economic performance in the industrial and developmental sociology. Furthermore, the project provides interdisciplinary and innovative methods that are new to current sociology, whereas the interests are similar to those of classical sociology.
