In Taiwan, a high homeownership rate coexists with rapidly rising housing prices, making housing costs a major financial burden. At the same time, educational spending remains a culturally important household investment. This study explores how housing price fluctuations affect household educational expenditure for children and whether this relationship varies by household characteristics.
Using panel data from the Taiwan Panel Study of Family Dynamics (2013–2021), combined with the city-level House Price Index of Anfu Institute for Financial Engineering, this study applies fixed effects models. It examines interaction effects involving housing tenure, residential region, intergenerational transfers, and generational cohorts. Control variables include parental expectations and children's age.
Findings show a significant crowding-out effect: a 1% rise in housing prices leads to a 0.81% reduction in education spending. Heterogeneity analysis further reveals that: (1) the effect is strongest among households living in family-owned homes, likely due to future home purchase planning; (2) regional differences are evident, with New Taipei City most affected; (3) Intergenerational transfers significantly moderate the relationship; and (4) no significant differences are found between Generation X and Y, indicating broad financial pressure.
This study departs from prior literature by focusing on educational spending and applying long-term panel data. It highlights how family and regional factors shape household responses to housing costs, providing empirical insights for housing and education policy.
