This research is focused on the process of art exhibition by clubhouses in Taiwan, which is aimed at promoting social dialogue through artistic performance such as drama, painting and photos. Mental illness is highly stigmatized in Taiwan that people with mental illness tend to be presented as patients or clients. Inspired by Western clubhouse model, Fountain House and Easy House in Taiwan are the few service programs in which people with mental illness are treated as non-patients and clubhouse is a home for them in the community. Since 2009, the two clubhouses have initiated an annual are exhibition by their members, in which members tell their stories through various forms of art, to promote social inclusion and dialogue. Research questions are three-fold: 1. At the individual level, how participants transform their lived experiences into understandable stories that are ready for public? Why participants are willing to show their private lives to strangers? At the practice level, how social workers use the art forms to help participants speak out for themselves? What kind of difficulties social workers encountered? At the policy level, why clubhouses choose art exhibition as the form of social dialogue to de-stigmatize mental illness? Ethnography will be adopted as research design in the two clubhouses. Each case will be studied for the whole process of recruiting, narrative group, creating arts, public exhibition and follow-up in the period of 18 months.
