This study focuses on E Ink Holdings as a case to explore how a firm in a highly dynamic technology industry develops and applies dynamic capabilities to achieve strategic adjustments, resource reconfiguration, and further, to construct and lead an industrial ecosystem. Theoretically, this research adopts the three dimensions of dynamic capabilities proposed by Teece et al. (1997)—processes, positions, and paths—as the core analytical framework, and integrates an ecosystem perspective to examine how E Ink demonstrated these capabilities across different stages of development and translated them into concrete actions for ecosystem governance.
The findings show that, through the evolution of its process dimension, E Ink progressed from internal manufacturing optimization to the development of institutional design and platform governance capabilities. In the position dimension, the firm moved from technology control and resource accumulation toward the articulation of clear value propositions and institutional leadership. In the path dimension, E Ink exhibited strong adaptability and innovation, enabling it to respond effectively to industrial challenges and to expand into diversified application domains. Overall, E Ink has not merely responded to external change but has gradually transformed into a designer and enabler of ecosystem.
