With a rising trend in suicide rates in Taiwan, research on suicide prevention is critical. A consensus among researchers is that suicidal behavior is not caused by a single factor. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) suggests that suicidal ideation and attempts are associated with distinct risk factors, which has profound implications for suicide prevention practices. Despite the persuasiveness of ITS, empirical studies have yielded modest effect sizes. This study posits that existing self-report questionnaires may not fully capture the constructs of ITS and may be unable to assess the psychological state of individuals at the moment of suicide risk. To address this measurement challenge, this research utilized proxy variables derived from the textual content of calls to a suicide prevention hotline, aiming to understand the psychological state of individuals during periods of acute suicide risk through text analysis. Adopting a closed-vocabulary approach, this study selected specific words as proxy variables and calculated their frequencies within the text. The data was subsequently used to conduct a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in an attempt to construct a factor model consistent with ITS. The vocabulary was sourced from two dictionaries: The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) and a dictionary developed by Cantu and Dykeman (2019) for text analysis in anorexia nervosa research (hereafter referred to as the ITS Dictionary). The results showed that the LIWC indicators only partially reflected the theoretical structure. Although the ITS Dictionary could establish a three-factor model, the relationships among its constructs were inconsistent with the theory. In contrast, a comprehensive dictionary developed by integrating indicators from both sources demonstrated a good model fit in the CFA. Moreover, the covariance relationships among the latent constructs—Thwarted Belongingness, Perceived Burdensomeness, and Acquired Capability for Suicide—were consistent with the theoretical expectations of ITS. Research findings, limitations, and directions for future research were also discussed. |
