The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is at war. On a “smokeless battlefield,” the CCP wages cognitive warfare against Taiwan (Republic of China, or ROC) and the United States. This “combined arms, multi-domain” warfare aims to divide, demoralize, and defeat both countries without firing a single shot. Specifically, the CCP intends to defeat Taiwan and the United States without them fighting back. On the cognitive battlefield, the CCP employs strategies such propaganda, disinformation, and misinformation campaigns; military intimidation; and espionage. Using a mixed methods public opinion approach, this thesis examines how the CCP uses cognitive warfare strategies to weaponize skepticism, or “mutual mistrust” between Taiwan and the United States, thereby driving a wedge between both countries. These attitudes are known as America Skepticism and Taiwan Skepticism. To explain the relationship between America and Taiwan Skepticism, this thesis utilizes the feedback loop model. Left unaddressed, the amplification of skepticism may yield a self-fulfilling prophecy of defeat. |
