This study aims to explore how interactive art can express the human experience of confronting fear and investigate the nature of fear as an emotion. It integrates systematic desensitization, a psychological therapy method, to design experiential scenarios. Fear, as a fundamental emotional response, has profound physiological and psychological impacts. When fear induces excessive stress, it can pose a threat to mental health, potentially leading to psychological disorders such as anxiety and phobias. Common treatments for phobias, such as systematic desensitization and ex- posure therapy, emphasize gradually confronting fear-inducing stimuli to ultimately achieve adaptation and healing. Based on these psychological theories, this study incorporates these concepts into interactive art, using virtual reality to create a series of fear-themed interactive artworks aimed at facilitating self-healing for participants.
The creative project primarily employs virtual reality to present different layers of fear in a progressive manner. Through multi-layered scene progression, it sim- ulates the gradual adaptation to fear stimuli, mirroring the experience in systematic desensitization therapy. The interactive experience allows participants to control the progression at their own pace, emphasizing the importance of self-regulation and emotional management. Additionally, virtual reality enhances participants’ sense of immersion, enabling them to explore and modulate their fear responses within a controlled environment, thereby reducing anxiety and stress.
During the experience, participants assume the role of patients entering various fear-inducing scenarios. Through self-observation and interactive feedback, they are encouraged to release and reflect on their inner emotions. This study not only aims to assist individuals suffering from phobias but also seeks to inspire the general public to rethink the relationship between fear and human experience, encouraging viewers to understand how to coexist with fear. The overall creation is not only an exploration of fear but also a profound reflection on psychological disorders and an experimental expression through art.
