Abstract:	大眾傳播能提供的功能共有幾種？專家學者的意見並不一致，但在各種功能中，娛樂必居其一，今日大眾傳播所提供這一方面的服務，又可稱為大眾娛樂（mass entertainment）。本文將單就報紙這一種印刷媒體進行「大眾化」與發揮娛樂功能的過程，以及大眾娛樂出現後報紙與讀者們所形成的新關係來做討論。在報業史上，給予進行大眾化的報業階段一個新的名稱「新的報業」（the New Journalism），亦即娛樂功能受到重視，應由「新的報業」開始。「新的報業」的新聞報導，已有本質上的改變，不再以知識份子做為唯一的服務對象。繼「新的報業」後，報業史上又出現「黃色報業」（yellow journalism）與「爵士報業」（jazz journalism）兩個階段，代表了報業從純正新聞走入了羶色腥新聞的階段。但過於羶色腥的新聞有鼓勵犯罪之嫌，並對大眾癖好與道德有害，所以針對報紙與「社會需要」、「讀者興趣」之間的關聯，本文也做了闡述。當然，報紙增加娛樂性題材爭取讀者已不是新鮮事，但經營者仍須思考報紙該拿什麼來教育大眾，才是對於讀者的責任，而不是純然提供讀者們想要的東西。
