    Abstract: 在傳播領域的批判研究有不同派別與主張，包括政治經濟取向的研究、新科技影響的研究、德國法蘭克福學派的研究、法國的語義研究及英國賀爾（Stuat Hall）所領導的當代文化研究等。他們的共同特徵，一方面是反對美國主流派以量化為主的微觀研究，一方面是從宏觀角度來解釋社會權力的運作，以及傳播在其間扮演的角色，本文則是以介紹英國賀爾的文化研究為主。本文從賀爾個人以及其所領導的「當代英國文化研究中心」之基本介紹切入，接著進入賀爾對於主流派傳播研究的批判論述，包含對於方法論上的爭議以及對社會及傳播理論的歧異。而賀爾的社會與文化理論雖然是源自於馬克斯主義，但賀爾也從中發現馬克斯主義中過於僵化的教條，於是先後援引了葛蘭西（Antonio Gramsci）的「意識形態爭制」與阿修瑟（L. Althusser）的「論域分析」來修正自己的文化研究理論。為了更具體說明賀爾如何運用其理論研究，本文也介紹賀爾與其同事針對大眾媒介如何報導犯罪新聞的實地研究，來了解賀爾對於社會結構與權力的分析。
