Abstract: This paper focuses on the usage of prefixed compound verbs of Japanese, considers the prefixed meaning and the conventionalization of form and meaning of prefixed compound verbs. The preceding verbs "uti-", "osi-", and "hiki-", which have strong active meaning, have prefixed meaning in common, but each has its own meaning related to its prototypical meaning. Some prefixed compound verbs are used in a particular form, some have limited objects, and some have both of them. It seems necessary to describe the conventionalization of form and meaning in prefixed compound verbs synchronically while considering the application for language education.
