Abstract:	1851年英國首度舉行「萬國博覽會」之後，歐美列強即競相仿效。流風所及，亞洲的日本也不甘人後，不僅在其國內舉行一系列的勸業博覽會，更在其所領有的殖民地（尤其是臺灣）大力推行此一展示體系。然而，為何殖民政府要不遺餘力舉辦各種展示活動？它與殖民統治的目標有何關聯？在各種展示活動中，殖民者建構了何種「臺灣」的形象？透過本書的討論，我們發現「展示」活動乃整體殖民政經文化控制不可或缺的元素，透過展示，殖民政府向外塑造成必峈v臺灣的形象，向內則對臺人推銷「文明開化」與「殖產興業」的殖民理念。為了展示臺灣，殖民者必須以近代發展出的知識體系解構並重組臺灣的形象，而重構出的新臺灣圖示，不僅只出現在展示會場，更意欲進一步成為改造臺灣空間、地景與認同的藍圖。面對此一藍圖，臺人或歡欣迎之，或謹慎應之，或激烈以拒，或無感以對，顯露臺人對此殖民現代性視覺表述多歧而複雜的社會文化面向。
