Dabajian Mountain (大壩尖山) is recognized as a sacred mountain by the Northern Atayal, who reside around the area of Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Yilan. The Northern Atayal tribe that inhabits this area had waged quite a few wars against Japanese amidst the latter’s colonization between 1900 and 1921. From the perspective of Taiwan governor-general, who implemented controlling-aborigine’s policy, the critical point to suppress the Atayal along the River Gogan (大嵙崁溪) lies in the influences on the entire aboriginal livelihood. Because this area is situated at the indispensable military zone under the controlling-aborigine’s policy, it is important to bring under domination the Atayal along the River Gogan from the viewpoints of politics, economy, transportation and tourism. The against-colonization-and-for-human-rights resistance history of the five Atayal tribes, including mlikwan, mkmazi, mgogan, msbtunux and mncaq, respectively, traces back to 1900, when the msbtunux initiated the anti-Japanese battle in camphor forests In 1907, they cooperated with the Han people to fight against the barricades put up by the Taiwan governor-general palace. The following conflicts encompass the one in 1910, when the Mgogan strove against the Japanese military invasion; and the Lee Dong-shan (李棟山) battle in Hsinchu in 1921. This book attempts to impartially cover the Taiwan governor-general’s controlling-aborigine’s policy and the aboriginal’s resistance history. This book furthermore emphasizes the historical data and the areal study on the basis of the coexistence of humanities and nature. In virtue of this research we hope to link Taiwan aboriginal history with the contemporary world topics.
