Title:	How the New York evening post commented on the Spanish-American war

Abstract:	關於美西戰爭的故事，許多人從黃色新聞上或多或少都有寫了解，但是仍有像《紐約晚間郵報》（The New York Evening Post）、《商業日報》（Journal of Commerce）、《波士頓書摘》（Boston Transcript）等媒體，拒絕加入其他媒體著重暴行的報導。本文即以《紐約晚間郵報》為例，檢視這類媒體在美西戰爭時的報導立場。眾所皆知，《紐約晚間郵報》的編輯Edwin I. Godkin強烈反對侵略主義（jingoism），所以當1895年2月24日，古巴開始革命時，《紐約晚間郵報》就一直抱持著反侵略主義的報導立場；而到了1895年3月8日，西班牙對美軍艦開炮，終於讓飢渴的美國媒體抓到機會，開始大肆報導戰事，此時《紐約晚間郵報》依舊保持原有立場，認為戰爭是不必要的，甚至反過來以古巴和西班牙的角度報導新聞。這樣的反侵略主義的立場即使美西戰爭中兩大關鍵事件──「De Lome Letter」與「Maine Incident」爆發後，《紐約晚間郵報》也始終沒有改變過，甚至和當時不斷渲染戰爭過程，導致戰火繼續蔓延的黃色新聞正面對抗。事後，即使美西戰爭被形容成是「雖是多餘卻是不可避免的戰爭」，但《紐約晚間郵報》自始至終堅持的反侵略主義報導立場，也讓學者Mott提出「若是當時所有媒體都像《紐約晚間郵報》一樣的報導，或許美西戰爭就不會爆發」的評論。
