    Abstract: 本文旨在介紹美國公共電視發展的特點，可以分為成立公視之理由、財務狀況與節目製作等面向探討。首先，美國成立公視是基於以下理由：(1)大眾應為文化和媒體所做的試驗付出代價；(2)公視可以承擔這項試驗，因為它不依賴收視率；(3)公視能鼓勵不同意見被大眾聽見。其次，美國公視主要的經費來源如下：(1)州政府補助，佔了22.4%；(2)公共廣播公司，佔19%；(3)觀眾會員費，佔37.6%；(4)業務營收，佔12.3%；(5)其他收入來源包括地方政府補助、聯邦捐贈和合約製作節目、基金會。最後，美國公視主要有兩個節目來源：(1)由許多「製作節目」的電台，做好節目再賣給其它的電台；(2)長久以來，英國BBC提供了不少的節目。
