    Abstract: 因為缺少有用且可比較的統計數字，對於美國書籍的出版事業做分析是相對困難的，直到一九七一年後，才能從美國出版家協會（The Association of American Pub lishers）獲得一些有用的資料，因此，我們應對此方面做更多的研究，以便獲得更寶貴的資料，並用來發展我們出版業。從出版業的歷史來看，可以發現多年以來，出版業的特色就是不斷的改變。從初始的印刷者是幫政府印製安全與宗教類的書，到後來的翻印書籍、印製報紙及年鑑，再到後來的教科書等，都可看出出版業（或稱印刷業）在美國的發展。直到二戰後，從平裝書的盛行都顯示出版業蓬勃發展的現象。但由歷史中也可看出，出版業如果是以斂財為目的，是很難用長久的權力來建立獨佔事業。一九三一年，美國大蕭條時期中，契尼（Cheney）針對一九三零至一九三一年書業的經濟做了一項調查，是近年來第一次針對出版業做的研究調查。但後來因大蕭條以及二戰的發生，使得出版業發生劇變，教科書出版在此時快速成長。此後，出版業開始走向專業的發展，也和不同的產業如電子業或大眾傳播業合併，本文針對一九六零至一九七零末的產業合併提供了數據可供參考。在未來，出版業的集中可能會是一種新的趨勢，政府該如何因應是個重要的問題。此外，未來社會的變遷與人口的成長，也會對出版內容產生影響，這些都是我們應該深思的問題。
