Title:	《萬國公報》對清末戒纏足運動的提倡 The Promotion of the Globe Magazine and a Review of the Times to Anti-Footbinding Movement in Late Ching

Abstract:	自明末以來，中國知識界已出現反省中國婦女地位的聲音，並進而謀求改善與提昇婦女地位，但實際影響不大。影響較大的是清末來華的傳教士，這批傳教士藉由教育和報刊宣傳作為改善中國婦女地位的途徑。清末的女權運動，始於戒纏足，傳教士對戒纏足活動的提倡與推廣不遺餘力。在傳教士所辦的刊物中，亦長期宣揚戒纏足。在傳教士所辦的刊物中，以《萬國公報》最為重要，該報以內容多、歷時長、影響大而彰名於當時。《萬國公報》內有關婦女的報導與論說為數可觀，數量達上百篇。以文章的主題而言，主要有四：戒纏足、興女學、抨擊違害婦女權利的陋習、東西方婦女地位的差異，其中，又以戒纏足為主題的文章最多。婦女纏足的陋習，在中國流傳已久，雖然宋代已有人提出對纏足的質疑，但大規模的戒纏足運動要到清末才開始流行。其中傳教士扮演重要的角色，他們利用報刊大力宣揚戒纏足，部分傳教士更將理念付諸行動，實際參與勸導婦女放足或不纏足。而在傳教士所辦的報刊中，又以《萬國公報》抨擊纏足最力，宣揚放足的文章最多，言論亦最為激烈。本文即在探討《萬國公報》對於清末戒纏足運動的提倡，藉由扒梳《萬國公報》中以戒纏足為主題的文章及報導，討論其對中國婦女纏足的觀感。由於這類的文章及報導很多，茲將其言論分成五部份來說明，故本文除前言、結語外，分成五節，分別為：論纏足之害、嘆放足之難、提放足之法、放足活動的相關報導、勸戒纏足的宗旨，希望藉此了解《萬國公報》對清末戒纏足活動的提倡，包括：《萬國公報》對於戒纏足的看法、報導與貢獻，並闡明傳教士對中國近代女權運動推展的貢獻與目的，加深我們對清末傳教士參與中國社會改革的認識。
