Prior to interaction with the outside cultures, the Ainu People had no formal alphabet or written language. The arrival of western and Japanese nationals influenced the creation of their written languages. The Ainu People learned the alphabets and vocabulary structure of these foreigner and wrote their language down using both alphabet systems and their corresponding vocabulary structure. During this period, the Westerners used Roman or Cyrillic alphabets while Japanese researchers used Katakana characters to write down the Ainu language. Among the Ainu People, those with a western education used the Roman or Cyrillic alphabets and those with a Japanese education used the Katakana characters when recording the Ainu written language. When using Kana Characters, it was occasionally necessary to create special characters to represent Ainu pronunciations that were not used by the Japanese in their character system. There are many Ainu People who are not accustomed to using the Roman alphabet system, so many publications have both types of writing systems to be viable since they have been used equally by the Ainu People. However, due to the popularity of computers and the internet, a perceived ease of use among the Ainu has increased the popularity of the Roman alphabet system.
