| Abstract: | 一個包含數詞、分類詞、名詞，用以表達數量的名詞詞組在數學上可能有六種語序，即[數量名]、[名數量]、[量數名]、[名量數]、[量名數]、[數名量]。Greenberg 的普遍原則20A表示有兩種語序不可能存在，即有名詞介入數量結構的語序：[量名數]和[數名量] (Her, 2017a, 2017b)。然而，據稱有一種數詞為「一」的N-intervening結構[量名數]存在於亞洲語言中，並被視為20A的反例。世界最大的分類詞語言資料庫WACL (World Atlas of Classifier Languages)於3338種語言中確定了728種分類詞語言，而其中又發現共有15種亞洲語言疑似違反20A，包括14種壯侗語系語言：Ai-Cham、Bouyei、Dai Zhuang、Guibei Zhuang、Liujiang Zhuang、Mak、Maonan、Nong Zhuang、Nung、Pubiao-Qabiao、Tai Dam、Yang Zhuang、Youjiang Zhuang、Zuojiang Zhuang，以及1種南亞語系語言：Mang。此篇論文檢視這些疑似違反20A的語言，並根據Her (2017a, 2017b)針對毛南語的N-intervening結構所提出的解釋，旨在證明出現於亞洲語言，疑似[量名數]結構中據稱為數詞「一」的句法單位實際上不是數詞，而是一個歷經語法化的不定冠詞，如同英文的a/an。因此，亞洲語言中所謂的[量名數]結構僅僅是中心語受限定詞修飾，並省略數詞「一」的名詞詞組，即[(數)量名限]結構，並非違反20A的N-intervening結構。
Mathematically, a quantifying nominal phrase consisting of a numeral (Num), a classifier (Clf), and a noun has six possible word orders: [Num Clf N], [N Num Clf], [Clf Num N], [N Clf Num], [Clf N Num], and [Num N Clf]. Greenberg’s Universal 20A states that the last two constructions, in which the N intervenes between Num and Clf, are impossible (Her, 2017a, 2017b). Yet, a putative N-intervening construction [Clf N Num], where Num is ‘1’, has been reported in some Asian languages as alleged counterexamples to the proposed universal. In this thesis, we examine such putative violations found in WACL, the World Atlas of Classifier Languages, the largest database of 723 numeral classifier languages out of 3338 languages surveyed. In total fifteen Asian languages are identified, fourteen of which are Tai-Kadai languages, i.e., Ai-Cham, Bouyei, Dai Zhuang, Guibei Zhuang, Liujiang Zhuang, Mak (China), Maonan, Nong Zhuang, Nung (Vietnam), Pubiao-Qabiao, Tai Dam, Yang Zhuang, Youjiang Zhuang, and Zuojiang Zhuang, and one Austro-Asiatic language, Mang. Following the account explicitly proposed by Her (2017a, 2017b) for Maonan, the goal of the thesis is to demonstrate that the alleged numeral one occurring in the putative [Clf N Num] construction in all these Asian languages is not a numeral at all syntactically and that it is in fact a grammaticalized indefinite article, similar to a/an in English. Consequently, the putative [Clf N Num] construction turns out to be merely an instance of the [[(Num) Clf N] D] construction, thus not an N-intervening classifier construction violating Greenberg’s Universal 20A. |
