The article considers the problem of taking into account the peculiarities of the native culture of students studying Russian by a teacher for whom this culture is alien. The emphasis is on what kind of idea the teacher has about someone else's culture, what kind of information, including stereotypical, about this culture he includes in the learning process. Russian literature teaching aspects interesting to Taiwanese students are described, some artistic texts influencing the formation of the image of Taiwan among native speakers of Russian culture are characterized.
