This study aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household alcohol consumption in Taiwan and to analyze the relationship between alcohol expenditure and leisure-related spending. Utilizing data from the 2017 to 2023 Family Income and Expenditure Survey, this research employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Difference-in-Differences (DiD) methods for empirical analysis, with household socioeconomic background variables included as controls.

The results indicate that the pandemic has had an overall suppressive effect on household alcohol expenditure. However, the influence of different types of leisure activities on alcohol consumption varies: dining and social interaction expenses, as well as entertainment and cultural expenditures, exhibit a significant complementary relationship with alcohol spending, whereas audiovisual subscription fees do not show a statistically significant association. Moreover, households with higher age and educational attainment tend to spend less on alcohol.

The DiD analysis further reveals that, compared to low-income households, high-income households experienced a significantly larger increase in alcohol expenditure following the outbreak of the pandemic. This suggests that high-income households possess greater consumption flexibility and adaptability, enabling them to maintain or even increase their alcohol spending under pandemic conditions.

In conclusion, the pandemic has altered household leisure and drinking behavior across different demographic groups. It is recommended that policymakers take into account the heterogeneity in drinking behavior associated with various population segments and leisure activity types, in order to enhance public health management and industry resilience.
