University libraries have long played a crucial role in the aggregation and dissemination of knowledge. Among their assets, special collections represent uniquely valuable resources that not only preserve rich cultural memory and scholarly potential but also support teaching development and the construction of institutional knowledge assets. However, the management, preservation, and revitalization of these collections face numerous challenges, particularly in integrating and applying digital resources. As libraries increasingly shift from being static repositories to dynamic, user-centered knowledge spaces, there is a pressing need for both theoretical frameworks and practical adjustments to unlock the academic potential of special collections. This study adopts the Knowledge-Based Theory (KBT), which regards knowledge as a core asset and source of competitive advantage within organizations, to construct a theoretical framework for analyzing the management of special collections. The framework encompasses four internal dimensions—knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and dissemination, knowledge integration, and knowledge application—alongside external driving factors such as organizational and management structures, technological innovation, and cultural and policy environments. Using a qualitative case study approach and in-depth interviews, this research investigates the special collections practices of two representative university libraries in Taiwan: National Taiwan University Library and National Chengchi University Library. Findings reveal that both libraries’ special collections demonstrate significant scholarly value and potential for knowledge transformation. Through curated exhibitions and guided tours, they promote knowledge sharing and public engagement. Despite active cross-institutional collaborations, they encounter challenges in resource integration, including platform heterogeneity, limited human resources, and lack of institutional support. In terms of knowledge application, the collections are widely used in teaching and research, yet remain constrained by copyright and data privacy policies. External factors such as organizational structures and technological adoption further influence management strategies, highlighting the critical role of institutional and cultural contexts. This study contributes by applying KBT to the field of library and information science, offering a theoretical framework for managing special collections as core knowledge assets. It recommends that university libraries institutionalize collaborative mechanisms, strategically integrate resources, and explore emerging technologies to enhance the circulation of knowledge and transmission of culture. Future research may expand to a broader range of libraries and incorporate user perspectives to further investigate special collections as essential academic infrastructure. |
