This study conducts a comprehensive examination of Primary/Elementary School Principals’ Leadership research using the Chinese academic database CNKI and the international database Web of Science (WoS). It analyzes the field’s developmental status, knowledge base, core hotspots, and emerging trends. CiteSpace software was employed to systematically retrieve and analyze all highly relevant literature from both databases, applying descriptive statistics, collaboration network analysis, co- citation analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and burst detection to construct a knowledge map. The study covers literature from 1995 to 2024, examining publication distribution, keywords, author networks, and research trends, and offers visual comparative and cross-cultural analyses. A total of 512 valid WoS articles and 378 CNKI articles formed the basis for mapping developmental trajectories in Chinese and international academia.

The findings indicate: (1) Asia serves as the core hub for development and collaboration; (2) the knowledge base centers on instructional leadership and teacher development, revealing complementarities and differences between Chinese and Western approaches; (3) core hotspots focus on leadership practices and institutional responses, reflecting multi-level concerns and cross-cultural differences; and (4) future research is shifting toward educational equity and digital leadership, with promising prospects for cross-domain dialogue and theoretical advancement.

Based on these results, the study recommends strengthening regional collaboration, deepening theoretical construction, reconnecting leadership with practical contexts and teacher support, addressing disparities through equity-oriented approaches, and preparing for future challenges to inform academic research and education policy.
