Crises are rampant in the 21st century. Because of rapid changes in the information society, crises occur in the "virtual" context. Furthermore, the interactions between substantial crises and such virtual crises are emerging. This study explores a new issue facing business communities in the 21st century, i.e., the internet crises. This study focuses on investigating the relationships between and among internet crisis situations, internet communications, and organizational response strategies. Multiple case-study design was adopted. Three companies and 10 cases were examined. Data collection involved multiple sources of information, which included: (1) content analysis of 72 internet attack messages, nine corporate press releases, and 61 news reports, (2) in-depth interviews with three in-house corporate PR executives, and (3) focus group interviews with eight Internet users. Theoretical exploration-wise, this study contributes to theory construction involving crisis management, PR strategies, and internet communication theories. The findings also shed light on the practice of internet crisis management and crisis communications in Taiwan.
