Abstract:	本計劃從現代音韻理論的觀點來研究東勢客家話的「聲調連併」(Tone Contraction)，也就是在音節發生連併時聲調如何變化。以往對「音節連併」的研究主要是著重「音段」(Segments)的變化，對於聲調的行為則多所忽略或輕描淡寫。本計劃則是以音節連併中的聲調變化為主題，從形式理論的角度來研究東勢客家話。本計劃之執行有兩點迫切性：一、近年來，雖然客語研究逐漸受到注意，但是客語在音韻理論方面的文獻卻非常貧乏，特別是在聲調理論方面，而且在國際重要學術期刊上(SSCI等等)也很少看到客語聲調的理論研究。二、藉由本計劃，可實際了解「韻律音韻學」(Prosodic Phonology)與「優選理論」(Optimality Theory)的結合在客語中的適用性及其應用價值。這是近二十年來最重要的兩個音韻理論，前者為80-90年住的研究重心，後者為目前音韻理論的主流。本計劃之執行主要是希望將客語聲調的研究直接與國際最新趨勢接軌。
