Abstract: German, as part of the Indo-European language family, and Chinese Mandarin, belonging to the Sino-Tibetan languages, is based on two different linguistic systems. Despite major differences in many structural regards, both languages use pronouns, even though they often differ in number and type. However, as far as personal pronouns are concerned, there seems to be a clear correspondence between the two languages and it is unlikely that there are any difficulties in the process of a mutual translation and what the translators have to do in the end is simply to perform a literal translation. In this paper, we try to find out if a mutual literal translation of personal pronouns simply works out in real situations. In our research, we firstly analyze the use of personal pronouns in the novel Morgen mehr, by the German novelist Tilman Rammstedt. Then, led by the contrastive languages, we attempt to illustrate dilemmas in a possible translation process and, finally, we suggest probable solutions on the basis of equivalent translation.
