The introduction discusses the social responsibility and pedagogical functions in foreign language teaching that literary translation carries and delineates the rationale for studying the Chinese translations of The Izu Dancer. Section one is a detailed discussion on the translation of chapter titles and the controversial portions in Chapter I. Section two covers the portions in Chapter II and III that need to be further deliberated in terms of their best translation. Section three illustrates the translation inadequacies related to Chapter IV-VII and expresses this author’s view on literary translation. The conclusion sums up the general weaknesses in the seven translations studied in the paper and also offers to explain why the inadequacies occur. Suggestions are made accordingly for the improvement of the teaching of translation and the quality of translation.
