The present project will base on textual analysis to explore the Spanish Civil War, the representation of historical memory and the discourse of heroes as central themes in the novels by three male writers (Javier Cercas, Eduardo Mendoza and Jorge Semprún) from different generations with distinct literary styles in order to research the evolution of contemporary Spanish narrative. This project will be conducted in three years. In the first year, I will focus on how Javier Cercas employs the hybrid genres, especially the “novela testimonial” and the detective genre, in an attempt to retell and represent conflict or dilemma as consequence of the blurring of reality and fiction in Soldados de Salamina (2001). Drawing from the concept of “collective memory" by Maurice Halbwachs, I will examine how Cercas, in his process of writing and remembering, intends to rewrite official versions of historical truth, explore and rescue some repressed historical memories of the past. I will also apply the heroic archetypes defined by Carol S. Pearson in order to construct or deconstruct (unknown) heroes’ multiple personalities in the novel. In the second year, I will analyze how Eduardo Mendoza employs the hybrid structural elements, especially the genres of novela negra, historical novel or spy thriller novel, to represent contradictions caused by dissolving the boundaries of the Civil War and the fictionalized historical episodes in Riña de gatos.Madrid 1936 (2010). I will subvert the portraits of anti-heroes and the discourse of heroes. Moreover, I will examine how Mendoza incorporates Spanish art (painting) in the numerous episodes of the novel, how art is connected with the development of characters as well as the dialogues between art and society. In the third year, I will center on how Jorge Semprún used the techniques of mixed genres and intertextuality in Veinte años y un día (2003) with the purpose of constructing or deconstructing the blurring of the Civil War and imagination. I will explore how characters from different generations (at the outset of Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship and post-Francoism) will challenge conflict and trauma from personal memories and collective memories. In addition to compare the similarities between the classic paining Judit y Holofernes and the fictional murder of the wealthy landlord by farm workers in 1936, I would like to analyze how Judit and her maid work together to behead the invading army`s general, Holofernes, and will be featured as female heroes to defend their own freedom and women`s subjectivity.
