Since their publication in 1812 Grimms' Fairy Tales have become known all over the world through translations into various languages. After their first fairy tale translated into Chinese, Xin An Xie Yi 《新庵諧譯》, appeared in mainland China in 1903, it has been translated or retold again and again on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and in Hong Kong. These translations are either written for adults or for children, written in Wenyan or in Baihua, translated directly from German or from an English version, and all have Chinese/Mandarin as their target language. In contrast, the book Li bô tiann kuè ê Kehlim tong-ue《你無聽 - 過ê格林童話》 published in 2021 is quite different as it contains the first of the Grimms' fairy tales translated into Taiwanese. This research not only examines the translation strategies and techniques used by the translator in his Taiwanese translation of Grimms' Fairy Tales, but also tries to prove that literary translation in particular can enrich the target language and preserve the tradition of its language use.
