This study analyzed the pattern and meaning of clients’ gift-giving behavior(GGB) in Chinese psychotherapy, revealed the impact of GGB on the therapeutic relationship, and examined counselors’ coping strategies for clients’ GGB. Using in-depth interviews, four semi-structured interviews were conducted with four experienced counselors with over 15 years of experience. The results revealed that the principle of clients’ gift-giving was not the gift that counts, but the thought behind it (Chinese idiom lǐ qīng qíng yì zhòng). Before clients delivered the gift, they observed the preferences or needs of their counselor. During gift-giving, clients tended to downplay the uniqueness of the gift by contextualizing their GGB, making the gift seem ordinary. For the meaning of gift-giving in the therapeutic relationship, it not only symbolized the three meanings of Renqing, clients’ GGB was also an attempt to bring daily social interactions into the therapeutic relationship. In addition, this study suggested that the impact of GGB on the therapeutic relationship was nurtured by the emotions triggered by GGB. Accepting or rejecting the gift triggered positive and negative emotions in the counselor and the client, which caused corresponding changes in their psychological condition and interaction, and the therapeutic relationship was thus affected. Besides, counselors’ attitudes towards GGB and how they cope with it varied with their work experience. Although counselors’ coping strategies changed over time, examining the gifts ethically was always important to counselors, their three major ethical considerations towards it were the price of the gift, the pureness of the gift, and the client per se. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that the discussion of GGB between the counselor and the client not only deepened the therapeutic relationship, but also benefited the client.
