Stress and anxiety are common mental health issues among university students. Although on-campus counseling services are available, practical limitations such as limited personnel and restricted service hours often prevent timely access to professional support. In this context, mental health APPs have gained increasing attention due to their accessibility, ease of use, and flexibility. However, empirical research on the effectiveness of such APPs in Taiwan remains scarce. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of a mental health APP on stress and anxiety among university students based on mindfulness intervention approach, aiming to address the gap in domestic literature and explore its practical efficacy.

A total of 67 university students were recruited and assigned to either the intervention group (n = 34) or the control group (n = 33) using matched pairs based on their pre-test stress scores. Participants in the intervention group were instructed to engage in designated mindfulness-related APP content for two weeks, followed by two weeks of free use. The control group was assigned to read psychoeducational articles related to mental health. All participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) before and after the intervention to assess changes in stress and anxiety levels. 60 participants (30 in each group) completed all measurements, and data analyses were conducted based on this sample.

Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, ANOVA and the Freidman two-way analysis of variance by ranks. Results indicated that the differences were not statistically significant between the experimental and control groups in stress and anxiety reduction. These findings suggest that the short-term use of the mental health APP may have limited impact on stress and anxiety reduction. Further analysis revealed that participants who met the study criteria (using the app for 7 days in the first week and at least 4 days in the second week) exhibited a significant decrease in stress scores in the second week , with no further significant changes observed between the second and fourth weeks. Although a decline in anxiety scores was noted in the second week, it did not reach statistical significance. These findings suggest that continuing using APP may help reduce stress, but its effect on anxiety remains unclear. Based on these findings, this study discusses the potential benefits and limitations of mental health APPs and provides suggestions for future research, practical application, and APP development, in the hope of promoting more evidence-based digital mental health solutions in Taiwan.
